Julie (Andrie) Alsop

DVM, Diplomate, ACVIM (Cardiology)

Dr. Julie Alsop, originally from Homer City, PA, earned her Bachelor's in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Pittsburgh and her DVM from Ross University. She completed a rotating internship at Kansas State University and a cardiology residency at CVCA, becoming a diplomate in 2019. Based in Austin, TX since 2019, she recently relocated to the east coast. Passionate about cardiac care, she emphasizes client education and comprehensive patient management. Dr. Alsop enjoys outdoor activities with her husband and pets. She currently practices at Partner Veterinary Care in Frederick, MD, and The Life Center in Leesburg, VA.

William Bush

VMD, DACVIM (Neurology)

Dr. Bush was an English major at College of the Holy Cross and a naval officer prior to graduating near the top of his class at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School. He then completed a rotating internship in medicine and surgery at NC State University. Dr. Bush then returned to the University of Pennsylvania for a residency in Neurology and Neurosurgery where he earned research and teaching awards. After finishing his residency, he settled into the DC Metro area and practiced locally until launching Bush Veterinary Neurology Service in 2005.

Feline Cardiomyopathy

This lecture examines the landscape of feline heart disease, addressing its prevalence, classifications, and variability. Emphasis is placed on the challenges inherent in detecting cardiac conditions in cats, alongside a comprehensive overview of diagnostic modalities available for assessment. Attendees will gain insights into distinguishing between different cardiac diseases in cats and determining appropriate treatment strategies. The session aims to equip veterinary professionals with a pragmatic understanding of feline heart disease, facilitating improved diagnostic precision and treatment efficacy in clinical practice.

This lecture will discuss four common cardiac emergencies: Congestive heart failure (canine focused), ventricular tachycardia, pericardial effusion and feline arterial thromboembolism. Attendees will gain an understanding of common presentations, diagnostics to confirm diagnosis, treatment options and outcomes of each.

Congenital Cardiac Disease in the Small Animal Patient

This lecture provides a comprehensive examination of the four most prevalent cardiac congenital defects encountered in veterinary medicine: Patent Ductus Arteriosus, Subaortic Stenosis, Pulmonic Stenosis, and Ventricular Septal Defect. Through an in-depth analysis, attendees will gain insights into the prevalence, underlying physiology, diagnostic approaches, and management strategies for each condition. Special emphasis is placed on understanding the alterations in normal blood flow through the heart associated with each defect and the consequent impact on overall cardiac function. By the end of the session, veterinary professionals will be proficient in recognizing, diagnosing, and managing these common congenital cardiac diseases, facilitating optimal patient care and outcomes.

Neurolocalization Made Simple

by Dr. Bush

During this lecture, participants will learn to apply fundamental principles to effectively localize lesions, enhancing their confidence in the process. Through video examinations and practical application of these principles, attendees will gain proficiency in localizing lesions in various areas including the forebrain, brainstem, spinal cord segments (C1-C5, C6-T2, T3-L3, L3-Cauda Equina), as well as muscle and nerve tissues.

Vestibular Disease – A Matter of Life or Death

This lecture emphasizes the crucial differentiation between central and peripheral vestibular diseases, highlighting their distinct prognoses and treatments. Attendees will gain proficiency in identifying central lesions versus peripheral ones, with a focus on conditions like Meningoencephalomyelitis of Unknown Etiology (MUE) and its management. Upon completion, participants will feel confident in localizing vestibular lesions and managing dogs with suspected MUE.

Seizure Part 1 – Seizure vs. Seizure-Like Episodes

In this lecture, participants will analyze video cases to distinguish between classic epileptic seizures and seizure-like events, using a systematic approach for accurate differentiation. Additionally, attendees will learn to utilize presentation information such as signalment and examination findings to effectively assess the underlying causes of seizures. Upon completion, participants will possess enhanced skills in discerning seizure types and identifying their potential origins.

Seizure Part 2 - Acute and Chronic Seizure Management

This lecture addresses the critical management of cluster seizures and status epilepticus, where mortality rates can be alarmingly high. Through analysis of video cases and EEG diagnosis of nonconvulsive seizures, attendees will develop enhanced clinical suspicion and understanding. An algorithm for in-hospital management will be provided, along with insights into the selection and application of maintenance and rescue anti-epileptic medications. Attendees will emerge with improved skills in managing convulsive and nonconvulsive seizures, as well as determining appropriate anti-epileptic drug therapy.

Current Recommendations on the Treatment of Acute Thoracolumbar Intervertebral Disk Extrusion (TL-IVDE)

This lecture focuses on thoracolumbar intervertebral disc extrusion (TL-IVDE), a frequent source of pain and weakness, sometimes posing life-threatening risks. Attendees will explore clinical features, indications for medical versus surgical management based on ACVIM consensus, prognosis considerations including progressive myelomalacia, and evidence-backed strategies for optimal medical treatment. By the end, participants will feel assured in their capacity to identify and effectively manage TL-IVDE cases.
